ED-530
Automatic Eddy Current Flaw Detector and Sorting System

  • Microprocessor-based circuitry.
  • Automatic, push button selection of operating frequency and balance.
  • Frequency ranges from 55KHz to 220 KHz
  • Manual controls permit "fine tuning" of automatic setup.
  • Compact and lightweight-less than 6 lbs.(2.72KG), including rechargeable NiCad batteries.
  • Built-in level gate includes both audio tone and tone discriminator.
  • Battery operates up to 10 hours on single charge.

The microprocessor-controlled ED-530 is a portable multi-purpose eddy current instrument. The unit's microprocessor "brain" is programmed to automatically set optimum test frequency, balance and lift-off compensation. Simple push-buttons control the instrument. Set up is fast and easy.

The ED-530 is an eddy current instrument for evaluating physical and metallurgical characteristics in conductive materials. It will locate surface and non surface discontinuities in non-magnetic materials. Surface defects may also be detected in magnetic materials where permeability is constant over the test area. The ED-530 will also sort both classes of materials according to properties such as hardness, alloy type, carbon content, heat treat condition, tensile strength and grain structure, as they relate to changes in the magnetic and electrical characteristics of the part. The instrument also measures conductive and non-conductive coatings and non-magnetic sheet thickness.

The ED-530 is a portable, self-contained electronic instrument offering high sensitivity , versatility and ease of operation. Either manual or automatic adjustment of frequency and balance controls allows the instrument to be set for highest sensitivity on various parts with various probes or coils. The manual controls can also be operated in conjunction with pushbuttons to permit "fine tuning" after automatic setup.

In addition to the easily read meter, the front panel includes the following:

Threshold Adjustment: Continuously variable adjustment of the gate circuits, threshold and the balance point for auto-balance.
Gate: L.E.D. indicator lights when the gate has been triggered.
Line: L.E.D. indicates that the A.C. line is charging the battery.
Frequency: Continually varies adjustment of operating frequency over the range of 55 KHz to 220 KHz. In the auto-set up mode, use as a fine adjustment of operating frequency +/- 10KHz.
Balance: Controls the position of the meter pointer.
Probe: BNC connector for a wide range of probes and coils.
Hold: Used in the auto setup mode, L.E.D. indicates that the probe should not be moved.
Sensitivity: For continuous adjustment of the gain between push button selectable settings.
Volume: Volume adjustment of both the internal tone generator and the external earphone.
Phone: Allows use of an external earphone in high-noise environments.

Pushbutton Controls

Threshold: Activates the threshold gate.
Tone: Activates the audio discriminator.
U/D: Selects up scale or down scale triggering for the threshold gate.
Balance: Activates the auto-balance function. Will set the pointer to the desired location on the meter face.
L.O.: Selects the lift-off compensation auto-setup mode.
Sort: Selects the sorting auto-setup mode.
Scan: Activates the auto-setup mode.
Battery: Depress to read battery status.
Frequency: Depress to display operating frequency.
Med. & High: Selects the sensitivity of the unit.
On/Charge: Power switch.
The unit is housed in a high-impact ABS plastic case (fitted with an adjustable handle).
