The ED-520XL is a microprocessor-based electronic Eddy Current instrument which offers
high sensitivity, versatility and simplicity of operation - all in a self-contained unit.
The instrument will locate surface and near-surface defects in non-magnetic materials
and surface flaws in magnetic materials. The ED-520XL will sort magnetic and non-magnetic
materials according to hardness, alloy type, carbon content, heat treat condition and
tensile strength. It will also measure coating thickness and conductivity on a comparison
basis.
Whether you are checking for cracks in aluminum, or, determining the condition of
heat-treated parts, the ED-520XL accurately measures the status of your test part. This
Eddy Current instrument is widely used to detect flaws in aircraft and automobile parts
like wheels, struts, engine components and engine mounts. In foundries and manufacturing,
the ED-520XL is used for quality testing of in-coming raw materials and finished product
quality control. The ED-520XL is also used in research and maintenance to verify test
results and check equipment for fatigue.

The ED-520XL is easy to operate with its push-button controls. In addition to the
easy-to-read meter, you can set an alarm to notify you when the meter hits a given level.
Or, you can attach an external accessory for additional flexibility. For complex testing
applications, we have designed and produced custom probes for automotive and aviation
testing, such as the wheel bead seat and bolt hole inspection and many manufacturing
applications. The control dials for Sensitivity, Lift-Off/Frequency, and Balance
contribute to your testing sensitivity level and testing calibration.
The instrument operates in a variable frequency range of 55 KHz to 220 KHz to
accommodate a wide range of testing materials.
The instrument comes with an aluminum flaw sensitivity test block on the face of the
unit. Also included in the package is a medium frequency, short pencil probe and cable.

The front panel complement includes an easily read meter and the following controls and
components:
| Sensitivity: |
Single-turn control for continuous adjustment of the gain between push-button
selectable settings. |
| Charge: |
LED indicates line cord is plugged in and battery is being charged. |
| Frequency: |
Continually varies adjustment of operating frequency over the range of 55 KHz to 220
KHz. In the automatic set-up mode, used to fine adjust lift-off/frequency. |
| Balance: |
Controls the position of the meter needle. |
| Gate: |
A rotary switch to select upscale or downscale triggering for the threshold gate The
single-turn potentiometer positions where the threshold gate triggers. The LED indicator
lights when the gate has been triggered. |
| Accessory: |
Analog outputs available for chart recorder; TTL output for relay. |
| Probe: |
BNC-type connector for a wide range of probes and coils. All previous ED-520 and
ED-530 probes and coils are compatible. |
| Push-Button Controls |
|
| BATTery: |
Depress to read battery status. |
| ON: |
Power switch. Embedded LED lights when power is applied. |
| BALance: |
Activates the auto-balance function. Will set the meter needle to the desired location
on the meter face. |
| SCAN: |
Activates the automatic lift-off compensation function. |
| FREQency: |
Depress to display operating frequency. |
| Range: |
Selects between the three sensitivity levels for the unit. |
